Observation

Updated: Dec 21, 2023

In inductive Bible study, the observation step is foundational. Done well, it provides the Bible student with an accurate picture of what the text says before moving on to interpretation (what text meant) and application (what the text means). The following steps are involved:

Carefully Read the Biblical Text

  1. Read the passage slowly, thoughtfully and repeatedly times.

  2. Read different translations to gain alternative perspectives on word choices and phrasing.

  3. Pay attention to everything, from the main events and characters to the smaller elements like specific words, figures of speech, and grammatical structures.

  4. Be aware of biases and preconceived notions about the passage or biblical themes in general. Let the text speak for itself.

Ask Questions

  1. Who are the main characters or people involved? What are their roles and relationships?

  2. What is happening in the passage? What are the key events and actions?

  3. When does the story take place? Is there a specific timeframe or historical context?

  4. Where does the story take place? Is there any significance to the setting?

  5. Why are the events happening? What are the motivations and causes?

  6. How are things happening? What is the style and method of presentation?

Take Notes

  1. Write down observations, questions and insights.

  2. Categorize observations by theme, character, or verse number for easier reference later.

  3. Resist the urge to jump to conclusions or draw interpretations during observation.

Identify Style, Repetition and Patterns

  1. Pay attention to words and phrases that appear multiple times. What is their significance? Do they create a theme?

  2. Compare the passage to other sections that relate to similar themes or topics. Notice any connections or repetitions in wording or ideas.

  3. Identify the genre (poetry, history, parable, prophesy, letter, law, etc).
